The collaboration between Tbilisi State University (TSU) and the University of Innsbruck (UIBK) has been growing since 2022, initially supported by APPEAR preparatory funding funded by OeAD that laid the foundation for ongoing joint research across the Alps and the Caucasus. What began as a focused effort to explore mutual scientific interests has evolved into a long-term partnership dedicated to advancing knowledge on mountain regions and supporting their sustainable and resilient development.
At the core of this collaboration is a Georgian-Austrian research team united by shared curiosity, complementary expertise, and a commitment to interdisciplinary work. Coordinating institution: In the ReMoDe project, the University of Innsbruck leads collaborative research on sustainable mountain tourism, drawing on interdisciplinary expertise to develop resilience strategies and facilitate transnational knowledge exchange between the Alps and the Caucasus.
Partner institution: As co-lead of the ReMoDe project, Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University advances research and capacity building for sustainable regional development, engaging academic and local stakeholders to co-create resilience solutions for mountain destinations.
Svaneti DMO (Mestia): As a regional partner in the ReMoDe project, the Svaneti DMO facilitates stakeholder engagement in Mestia, helping identify local challenges and co-develop strategies to strengthen tourism resilience in the Caucasus.
Tiroler Oberland Tourism Association (Kaunertal section): Within the ReMoDe project, the Tiroler Oberland Tourism Association contributes local knowledge and stakeholder networks from Kaunertal, supporting participatory workshops and the development of destination-specific resilience indicators.
